What is the difference between T4 and MC4 connectors?

2024-09-03

T4 and MC4 connectors are both commonly used in solar panel systems, but they differ in several key aspects.

MC4 Connector: The MC4 connector, which stands for "Multi-Contact 4mm," features a 4mm diameter contact pin. It adopts a plug-and-play design with male and female ends, ensuring proper connection and avoiding reverse polarity. It includes a locking mechanism that provides a secure connection through a simple push-in and lock system, minimizing the risk of accidental disconnection.

T4 Connector: Developed by Amphenol Industrial Solar Technologies, the T4 connector boasts a screwless design that allows for quick and easy installation and disconnection without specialized tools. This design enhances convenience during maintenance and component replacement.

MC4 Connector: Typically rated with IP67 or IP68 protection, the MC4 connector effectively shields against moisture and dust intrusion, making it suitable for various outdoor environments. It utilizes high-quality metallic materials for excellent conductivity, ensuring stable power transmission with minimal power loss. Its materials are stable within a temperature range of -40°C to +90°C and exhibit good resistance to various chemicals.

T4 Connector: The T4 connector also demonstrates improved performance parameters, such as higher current-carrying capacity and better durability. Depending on specifications, it can have a rated voltage up to 1000V/1500V DC (IEC) or 600V/1000V DC (UL) and higher rated currents. Additionally, it undergoes rigorous safety certification tests, including temperature cycling, impact, and pull tests, to ensure reliability and safety across different environments.

MC4 Connector: Widely recognized as the industry standard for solar panel systems, the MC4 connector is compatible with numerous solar panels and photovoltaic (PV) components, enabling flexible system design. Its broad application base and positive market reputation contribute to its dominant market position.

T4 Connector: While the T4 connector is gaining popularity in PV installations, it has not yet achieved the widespread adoption of the MC4 connector. However, with technological advancements and evolving market demands, the T4 connector has the potential to capture a larger market share in the future.

The T4 and MC4 connectors differ significantly in their design and structure, performance parameters, and application compatibility. The MC4 connector, as the industry standard, offers a proven track record and broad compatibility. Meanwhile, the T4 connector, with its innovative screwless design and enhanced performance characteristics, is gradually gaining recognition in the market. The choice between the two depends on specific application requirements and preferences.
